A name stands for an address: alice.arg instead of arg1q…. Registered on the chain, paid to the treasury, yours for a year or more.

A label is 3 to 32 characters: lowercase letters, digits and hyphens, not at either end. A year is 52,560 blocks. After expiry the owner alone can renew for 30 days (4,320 blocks); then the name is free again.
How it works
A name operation is an ordinary transaction with a memo: NMS1 register alice 2. The address that signs it owns the name. The first valid operation on the chain wins; an operation that breaks a rule confirms as a plain payment and changes nothing.
Reserved labels (argonmine, treasury, pool, bridge, swap, explorer, docs, app, www, admin, support, team, official) can be registered by the treasury only.
